Sperm Whale (Physeter macrocephalus)

Single front blowhole, slightly left

Smooth appearance of the head

Only a low hump instead of fin

Visible bumps between hump and tail

Very large, square‑shaped head

Grey‑brown skin, wrinkled with stripes

Small flippers shaped like spatulas

Pale underslung jaw

  • Length: Largest toothed whale, males reaching about 16 metres

  • Group Size: Females in stable groups; males mostly solitary

  • Key Features: Huge square head, narrow jaw, single blowhole

  • Behaviour: Deep long dives for squid; powerful angled blow

  • Habitat: Deep offshore waters worldwide, especially near submarine canyons

  • Conservation Status: Listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List
