Small melon and very short beak

Small curved and pointed flippers

  • Length: Medium dolphin around 3 meters 

  • Group Size: Very social; pods average 100-1000 animals

  • Key Features: Streamlined slender body, black upper body and white under body, no dorsal fin

  • Behaviour: Fast swimmer; porpoise at high speeds, low leaps, belly flops, rapid surficing 

  • Habitat: Cool deep temperate waters of Southern Hemisphere, offshore and slope zones

  • Conservation Status: Listed as  Threatened by the IUCN Red List
