Sato's Beaked Whale (Berardius minimus)

Small dorsal fin set far back

Wide flukes with no central notch

Rounded forehead tapering to pale beak

Shorter, smaller beak than relatives

Few scars with distinct white spots

Slim flippers with pointed or rounded tips

  • Length: Medium‑large beaked whale reaching about 6–7 metres

  • Group Size: Typically found in small, tight social groups

  • Key Features: Slender body, bulbous forehead, long beak, dark

  • Behaviour: Deep‑diving species rarely observed at surface

  • Habitat: Cold‑temperate northwest Pacific, especially around Japan

  • Conservation Status: Listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List
