Longman’s Beaked Whale (Indopacetus pacificus)

Linear fight scars plus oval bite

Big dorsal fin set back

Large rounded melon hanging forward

Long and tube-shaped

Small, narrow and tapering

Dark back, pale belly and sides

  • Length: Large beaked whale reaching roughly 6–9 metres

  • Group Size: Often seen in large, tight social groups

  • Key Features: Slender body, long beak, pale forehead, tall dorsal fin

  • Behaviour:  Deep diver; sometimes associates with pilot whales

  • Habitat: Deep tropical to warm‑temperate Indo‑Pacific offshore waters

  • Conservation Status: Listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List
