Indus River Dolphin (Platanista minor)

Prominent, steeply rising forehead

Grey‑brown body, lighter belly

Short, hump‑like fin on back

Wide, well‑developed tail fluke

Long, thin beak, wider at tip

Tiny dot‑like eyes, rely on sound

Long, broad flippers for swimming

  • Length: Medium river dolphin measuring 2–2.5 metres

  • Group Size: Mostly solitary; small groups up to three

  • Key Features: Long beak thickened towards the tip, steeply-rising forehead, tiny eyes, small, triangular dorsal hump

  • Behaviour: Side‑swimming; highly vocal; minimal aerial activity

  • Habitat: Freshwater Indus River between major barrages

  • Conservation Status: Listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List
