Indian Ocean Humpback Dolphin (Sousa plumbea)

Dark grey with possible white mottling

Pronounced dorsal hump with small curved fin

Broad, rounded or pointed tail flukes

Slender, distinct, elongated rostrum

Wide, rounded fins relative to body

Underside noticeably lighter than back

Distinctive, rounded and prominent melon

  • Length: Medium dolphin measuring roughly 2–2.8 metres

  • Group Size: Social groups averaging around twelve individuals

  • Key Features: Fatty dorsal hump, dark gray body, slender form

  • Behaviour: Surfaces at steep angle; occasional fluke showing

  • Habitat: Shallow coastal waters under 20 metres depth

  • Conservation Status: Listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List
