Fin Whale (Balaenoptera physaul)

Light V‑mark behind head, right‑side stronger

Small curved fin leaning backward

Dark upper body, bright white underside

Flat, straight head profile

Robust tail stock with ridge

Right lip white, left lip dark

Broad flukes with a deep notch

Light streaks behind eye and flipper

50-100 throat grooves that extend to navel

Narrow flipper; dark top, white below

  • Length: Second‑largest whale, typically reaching 20–25 metres

  • Group Size: Usually solitary or in small migratory groups

  • Key Features: Long slender body, grey dorsum, white right lower jaw and underside​

  • Behaviour: Fast swimmer with deep dives while feeding

  • Habitat: Temperate to polar oceans, mainly offshore waters

  • Conservation Status: Listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List
