Dall’s Porpoise (Phocoenoides dalli)

Small, mid‑back triangular fin with pale tip

Deep, strong tail base with bump

Small, cone‑shaped head with no beak

Short mouthline curving a little

Small, dark flippers up front

Dark upper body, white belly patch

Small flukes with white edge

  • Length: Small robust porpoise measuring 2.14 to 2.44 metres

  • Group Size: Usually two to twelve; sometimes hundreds or thousands

  • Key Features: Dark grey to black, stocky body with diagnostic white undersides and flank patches; short, wide-based, triangular dorsal

  • Behaviour: Fast swimmers creating distinctive “rooster tail” spray

  • Habitat: Temperate to boreal North Pacific waters over 600 feet

  • Conservation Status: Listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List
