Blue Whale (Balaenoptera musculus)

Prominent ridge in front of blowhole

Light gray, speckled skin with blue tint

Short dorsal fin near the tail

Wide, flat head with U‑shape

Massive, slender flukes with smooth edges

Uniform light gray‑blue head

Long, narrow flippers with light‑edged tips

Very thick tail stock

60-88 dark-coloured throat grooves

  • Length: Largest animal alive, reaching up to nearly 30 metres in length

  • Group Size: Mostly solitary or in very small groups

  • Key Features: Slate‑blue body, mottled spots, small dorsal fin

  • Behaviour: Powerful blows, long dives, seasonal long‑distance migrations

  • Habitat: Open‑ocean pelagic waters from tropics to polar regions

  • Conservation Status: Listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List
