Wide tail flukes, no notch

Flat melon in front of blowhole

Back marked with scratches and scars

Large raised jaw arch

Small, slim flippers in body pockets

Dark upper body, pale belly

Short, broad beak to sloping head

  • Length: Medium beaked whale measuring roughly 4.5–5 metres

  • Group Size: Usually solitary or in small, loosely associated groups

  • Key Features: Arched lower jaw, erupted male teeth, slender body

  • Behaviour: Deep diver; elusive, surfaces briefly between long dives

  • Habitat: Deep tropical to warm‑temperate offshore waters worldwide

  • Conservation Status: Listed as Last Concern on the IUCN Red List
