Antarctic Minke Whale (Balaenoptera bonaerensis)

Narrow pointed head with single ridge

Light grey W shaped  pattern between flippers 

Tall, hooked dorsal fin set 2/3 back

50-70 throat pleats extend past flippers

White lower body, with lateral light grey lobes and streaks

  • Length: Small rorqual whale , reaching 8-10 meters 

  • Group size: Usually solitary  or in pairs

  • Key features: Narrow pointed head with single ridge, tall hooked dorsal fin, pale thin streaks trailing from blow hole slits, light grey W shaped pattern between flippers

  • Behaviours: Brief surfacing intervals, small and weak blow 

  • Habitat: Coastal and open ocean waters

  • Conservation status: Listed as Near Threatened by IUCN Red List
