Melon-Headed Whale (Peponocephala electra)

Dark body, slightly darker on top

Tall, curved dorsal fin with pointed tip

Wide tail flukes, notched in middle

Rounded melon forming a triangular shape

Beak absent or barely visible

Long, narrow flippers with convex edge

Irregular light patch on throat and belly

  • Length: Small black dolphin measuring roughly 2–2.7 metres

  • Group Size: Highly social, forming large groups of hundreds

  • Key Features: Rounded head, dark body, pale lips and belly

  • Behaviour: Fast, active swimmer; often forms tight surface schools

  • Habitat: Deep tropical to subtropical offshore waters worldwide

  • Conservation Status: Listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List
