Harbour Porpoise (Phocoena phocoena)

Small triangular fin mid‑back

Mottled light‑to‑dark body sides

Medium flukes with central notch

Blunt, rounded, short‑beaked head

Small mouthline rising toward eye

Dark, small flippers with rounded tips

White to pale gray underside

  • Length: Small porpoise measuring roughly 1.4–1.9 metres

  • Group Size: Usually solitary or in groups under six

  • Key Features: Small, compact body; low triangular dorsal fin

  • Behaviour: Quiet surfacing; brief, inconspicuous appearances at surface

  • Habitat: Cool temperate coastal waters under 100 metres

  • Conservation Status: Listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List
