Cuvier’s Beaked Whale (Ziphius cavirostris)

Adults often have white scratch marks

Tiny hooked fin near back end

Broad tail flukes without center notch

Sloping head with slight front dip

Short, unclear beak shape

Small, narrow fins tucked in dips

Robust, cigar‑shaped body

  • üLength: Medium beaked whale reaching about 5–7 metres

  • Group Size: Usually solitary or in small tight groups

  • Key Features: Bulbous forehead, short beak, two forward‑tilted teeth

  • Behaviour: Extremely deep diver, long dives exceeding two hours

  • Habitat: Deep offshore waters near steep continental slopes

  • Conservation Status: Listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List
